For the riverfront and for the lakes-and-hill neighborhoods a short ride away, the outdoor opening is one of the more dependable markers that the season has turned. After a winter spent indoors at the Mill City Museum, the market spreading back out along the street is its own small announcement of summer.
The market leans local and seasonal: produce from area growers, bread and pastry, cheese and meat, flowers, prepared food and a rotating cast of artists and makers. Early in the season the tables run heavy on greens, starts and storage crops; by midsummer the stalls fill out with the berries, tomatoes and sweet corn that make a Minnesota market worth the trip.
