Big Hill Books, the general-interest bookstore Beth Thompson opened at 405 Penn Ave. S. in July 2023, has become a fixture of Bryn Mawr's small business district.

Thompson held the shop's grand opening July 15, 2023, in a multi-level building constructed as a chapel in 1915. The store carries an inclusive general-interest inventory plus toys, puzzles, gifts, greeting cards and home-and-garden goods, and its name nods to the neighborhood: Bryn Mawr is Welsh for "big hill".
The district around it is modest, a cluster of shops and restaurants rather than a commercial strip, and its appeal is that residents can reach a meal, groceries or a book on foot, with a coffee shop directly across the street. That kind of compact, walkable node is what urban planners have long argued for, and Bryn Mawr offers a concrete version of it: a few blocks where errands and chance encounters happen without anyone starting a car.
The economics are unforgiving. Independent shops run on thin margins against online and big-box competition, and a neighborhood district survives only if enough nearby residents choose it often enough to keep the lights on. That mutual dependence is the quiet lesson of Bryn Mawr's commercial node: a walkable core is not permanent but fragile, lost storefront by storefront when foot traffic falls away.

The East Isles Neighborhood Association holds its annual Summer Social on Wednesday, June 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Joanne Levin Triangle Park, with a rain date of June 15.

The blotter and neighborhood safety.
The Lowry Hill East Neighborhood Association reviews apartment and land-use proposals in the Wedge through its Community Development Committee, the volunteer-led forum where the neighborhood weighs in before projects reach the City Council.

Land use is the recurring flashpoint in Lowry Hill, a neighborhood of Victorian and Prairie-style homes where even a modest multi-unit proposal draws scrutiny under the city's built-form rules and the 2040 comprehensive plan.
